A recent report on AI apps surfaced an alarming statistic: men make up 84.5% of all ChatGPT mobile users across all age groups. The divide isn’t unique to ChatGPT. Only 18.2% of AI general assistant app users and 14.2% of AI graphics generator and editor app users are female.
The data from app analytics firm Appfigures shows that some segments of AI apps — education (31.4% female), companion (30.2%), and health (25.6%) — are more popular with women, but even those fail to crack a majority of users. Why does this gap exist? TechCrunch notes that though women hold prominent roles in the AI industry, research shows that women tend to be more skeptical about AI than men.
As we recognize International Women's Day on Saturday, Workera wants to remind our community: AI is for everyone. Individuals and organizations that have adopted an AI-first mindset — using the technology to enhance decision-making, automate routine tasks, and leverage data-driven insights — are already seeing a competitive advantage.
Why being an AI-first organization helps close the gender gap
AI-first organizations do more than adopt new technology — they create a culture where everyone, regardless of gender or role, can build AI skills and apply them every day. This inclusive approach helps close the confidence and usage gap, giving everyone more opportunities to shape how AI is used in their work and careers.
For enterprises, fostering AI fluency is about more than closing skills gaps — it’s about ensuring all employees can contribute to the innovation and productivity gains AI offers. When AI adoption is inclusive, the whole organization benefits.
By embedding AI into workflows and investing in ongoing skills development, AI-first organizations make sure women aren’t just users of AI — they’re leaders in how it transforms business.
We hope to see the AI gender gap close in 2025.
As we recognize International Women’s Day, it’s not only a moment to honor the resilience, contributions, and achievements of women everywhere — it’s a call to action for all of us to continue to work together to ensure everyone has a voice in shaping the future of technology.
How women are seizing the AI opportunity
We asked a few of the fantastic women on our team to share how they use AI, both professionally and personally, in their day-to-day lives. Here’s what they had to say:
Falen Milton, VP, People at Workera
- Professionally: “As a true ESFP, I naturally rely on feelings—both mine and others'—to make decisions and communicate. However, I’ve realized that not everyone processes information the same way. GenAI has helped me refine my messaging, ensuring my ideas are framed in a way that resonates with different audiences. This has made my async communication more effective, improved clarity, and helped me build stronger alignment on key initiatives.”
- Personally: “I’ve even used it to ‘translate’ my thoughts more logically in discussions with my husband—especially during arguments (smirk). Beyond that, GenAI has been a game-changer for researching potential places to live, creating meal plans, and staying organized while juggling work, kids, and everything in between.”
Sara Silva, Frontend Engineer at Workera
- Professionally: “As an engineer, I'm super avid in incorporating new technology into my day-to-day tasks to be faster and more agile on repetitive and sometimes monotonous tasks. AI is now engraved in all my tasks: from code brainstorming to code debate, and even helping me set up new environments and configurations that previously required extra help and extra hours.”
- Personally: "AI has been a great tool for grasping concepts and areas that previously seemed unreachable to me! I have been using it as a starting point for gaining a better understanding of law and economic concepts and starting to build my vocabulary in these areas. It has also been great for traveling and budgeting!”
Elsa Olivares, Senior Software Engineer at Workera
- Professionally: “As a software engineer collaborating with teams worldwide, AI helps me streamline development, bridge language gaps, and quickly resolve coding doubts and questions. It boosts productivity by automating repetitive tasks, optimizing workflows, and making problem-solving faster—so I can focus on more meaningful challenges.”
- Personally: “Beyond work, AI enhances how I manage my time, whether it’s planning trips or discovering new recipes for my day-to-day organization. It also fuels my curiosity, helping me quickly learn about topics like economics and nutrition. It sparks creativity, simplifies decision-making, and helps me learn new things faster.”
Mariah Medus, Virtual Office Manager at Workera
- Professionally: “One of my favorite ways to leverage AI is through its capability to streamline complex and time-consuming tasks. For example, AI helps me draft and refine policies by ensuring they are clear and compliant. It also plays a pivotal role in event planning, particularly with offsites. AI tools analyze travel options, accommodation suitability, and even team preferences to help design memorable and effective programs. In project management, its ability to automate task prioritization and track progress keeps projects on schedule and teams aligned.”
- Personally: “I love using AI to enhance my personal life, especially for travel planning and shopping. It customizes travel itineraries that match my interests and budget, and continuously updates me on the best deals or changes in schedule, which is a huge time saver. For shopping, AI is fantastic for quickly finding products that meet my specific needs by analyzing numerous reviews and summarizing the most relevant information. It’s also been a great assistant in wedding planning, organizing tasks, and offering creative suggestions based on trends and my preferences.”
Lauren Koszarek, VP, Marketing at Workera
- Professionally: “In my role as a leader in marketing, we’ve embedded AI across our workflows to help my team work smarter and move faster. From using AI to surface account insights and personalize outreach at scale to tracking market signals and shaping data-driven messaging, AI helps us stay ahead of trends and keep every touchpoint relevant to what matters most to our buyers today. We also actively invest in emerging AI tools, ensuring my team has access to cutting-edge capabilities that amplify creativity, boost efficiency, and ultimately drive greater impact across pipeline and revenue.”
- Personally: “As a busy parent, AI has become a central part of how I manage both my personal life and my work. I’ve replaced endless Google searches with AI tools that help me plan smarter workouts, research creative ideas, and even uncover unique baby names that fit my family’s style. Beyond saving time, AI acts as a personal research assistant and creative collaborator, helping me make faster, more informed decisions — whether I’m juggling family priorities or preparing for a key executive campaign.
Investing time in learning and adopting AI isn’t just worth it — it’s quickly becoming essential. The payoff is clear: greater efficiency, sharper insights, and the ability to make smarter decisions faster — both at work and in everyday life.
Women are helping build and shape the AI technologies changing the way we work, relax, and learn about the world. Women should be using them, too.
