Meet Sage: A Breakthrough in How We Assess, Verify and Develop Skills

When we founded Workera in 2020, we set out an ambitious vision to help people achieve their potential by giving them a clear understanding of their skills. We started with highly technical AI skills trending in Silicon Valley, but our goal has always been to expand this to every skill.

Measuring every skill is complicated. The measurement instruments and interfaces we use to assess someone’s coding ability are different from those we use to assess someone’s communication skills.

Four years ago, we recognized that the technology to create dynamic front-end interfaces for every skill we wanted to assess wasn’t there yet. So we concentrated on the back end — building the adaptive algorithms, data infrastructure, skills ontology, and psychometrics framework that form the foundation of our platform. Whether we're measuring AI skills or behavioral skills, our core capabilities — assessing a skill, inferring related ones, establishing benchmarks, and determining the next best question — remain consistent across the board.

Recent advancements in muti-modal AI have brought us closer to realizing our vision by enabling the development of an agent that not only accurately measures skills but also adapts its interface to align with the specific skill being assessed.

Today, we’re unveiling Sage — the AI agent mentor that transforms both Workera itself and how users engage with our skills intelligence platform. Sage isn’t a product feature; it’s a deeply integrated agent rooted in our expertise in skills verification and development. We know that the world needs more mentors, and Sage will help us bridge the gap.

Here’s what Sage will mean for Workera users.

Tailored experiences for every learner, leader and skill

Traditionally, the word “sage” has meant two things: a wise adult or, in a more friendly sense, a helpful individual. For Workera, Sage fills both roles: an expert who can offer wisdom based on extensive knowledge and experience, as well as a helpful friend who can lead and encourage users to achieve their potential.

For our customers, Sage understands every user from day one thanks to our HR integrations and onboarding processes. It learns each employee’s job context, determines the most relevant skills to verify, verifies them, and provides a clear analysis of any skill gaps. From there, Sage guides users to close those gaps—whether through direct practice or tailored learning resources.

Think of Sage as an integrated AI mentor both for a company’s individual learners and its leadership. For learners, it starts with conversational assessments that provide feedback, benchmarks, and guidance to gain skills. For leaders, it offers insights, analytics, and actionable recommendations on talent management, adopting a more formal tone focusing on the business impact of each decision.

One of the things I appreciate most about Sage is how it redefines skill assessment. Instead of sticking to traditional formats like multiple choice, it uses a variety of tools and interfaces tailored to the specific skill being measured.

Built on industry-leading skills verification

Workera has always been grounded in psychometrics, adaptive algorithms, competency models, and proficiency benchmarks. We continually update these models with the latest data and methodologies, ensuring our customers remain at the forefront of skills development. I think of this as our back-end—built to evolve and withstand future innovations.

With the introduction of Sage, we’re future-proofing our front-end too. Sage taps into the latest available AI technologies to generate dynamic interfaces relevant to the measured skill. As AI capabilities improve, Sage will support more interfaces that deepen its engagement with each learner, offering the exact tools they need. This also brings significant benefits for accessibility, so more people can enjoy a positive experience on the platform.

Plus, Sage will improve by teaching itself. The agent evolves by learning from its interactions with users, using those experiences to continually update its models and improve the guidance it offers. As Sage’s benchmarks grow with each user, they ultimately help everyone by providing clearer insights into skill levels. Soon, Sage may have the world’s most precise understanding of skills, turning that into better intelligence for learners.
